The Leftist Reaction within the Anglosphere

While leftists all over the world have had a hard time coping with the re-elction of Donald Trump for a second term as US president, the leftist reaction in the Anglosphere seems to be particularly strong at the moment. Last week the Pactum Institute reported on how the far-left's surge at the polls in Canada was to a large extent driven, by anti-Trump sentiment, and the same can be said about this week's result in the Australian federal election. The landslide re-election of Anthony Albanese’s Labor government, securing at least 85 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives, is not merely a political victory for the Left but a spiritual and cultural rebuke of the Christian foundations that once shaped that nation. Back in 1885, sir Henry Parkes, the father of the Australian federation, noted that they “are pre-eminently a Christian people—as our laws, our whole system of jurisprudence, our Constitution … are based upon and interwoven with our Christian belief.”

Yet this week the Marxist Albanese, who became the first Australian leader in decades to secure re-election for a second term, secured around 35% of the vote, with the Liberal coalition coming in second at just under 32%. The ruling Labor Party increased its share of the national vote with over 2%, even while its globalist policies—such as commitments to a green agenda and loosened border control—echo the hubris of Babel. As in Canada's case, the Australian right was nowhere to be found.

The leftist reactionary surge in the Anglosphere is the direct result of a spiritual crisis. Despite the current revival of Christianity in Great Britain, the recent election results in Australia and Canada, reveal the extent to which these peoples have been seduced by fantasies of globalist utopianism and social justice crusades. Despite currently suffering an unprecedented cost of living crisis, this nation seems determinined to maintain their depraved commitment to exchanging the truth of God for a lie (Romans 1:25).

The church must recognize these election results for what they are: political manifestations of national apostasy. These nations are in desperate need of national repentance, which would entail reforming their cultures and institutions to align with the principles of Scripture, raising up godly families and establishing churches that boldly proclaim Christ’s lordship over every square inch of creation. Christians must resist this leftist reactionary tide through prayer, bold witness, and principled engagement in the public square.

The church, anchored in the sovereign Lord Christ, must stand firm, proclaiming the truths of divine revelation that alone can renew the Anglosphere. Let us labor for the day when it can be once again be said of the Canadian and Australian peoples: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12).
